RHH Heating Project

W Wright proudly served as the Mechanical and Electrical Services Contractor and principal contractor for a vital project commissioned by Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. This large-scale project involved replacing existing steam boilers and calorifiers with modern, energy-efficient condensing boilers, enhancing the heating systems across multiple hospitals within the Sheffield region.

The project aimed to significantly improve the efficiency of the Low Temperature Hot Water (LTHW) Heating systems that serve the Royal Hallamshire Hospital, Jessops Wing Maternity Hospital, Weston Park Hospital, and Charles Clifford Dental Hospital.

Key Project Deliverables:

The scope of work involved a range of complex and technically demanding tasks, all of which were carried out while maintaining a high standard of safety and minimizing disruption to hospital services. The key components of the project included:

Dismantling and Removal of Existing Boilers and Flues:

The first step in the process was to carefully decommission and remove the existing steam boilers and flue systems. This was a crucial phase to ensure that the outdated systems were fully dismantled and cleared to make way for the new installations.

Installation of New Support Steelwork and Flooring:

In order to support the new condensing boilers, we installed robust steelwork and upgraded the flooring, ensuring that the new systems would be securely mounted and stable over the long term.

Installation of 9 x 1.5MW Condensing Boilers:

Nine new 1.5MW condensing boilers were installed, offering enhanced energy efficiency compared to the old steam boilers. These new systems provide better heat generation and significantly reduce energy consumption, contributing to both environmental sustainability and cost savings.

New Conventional Flue Installations:

We installed new conventional flue systems from the C&D floors, carefully designed to terminate at the T floor. This ensures that the new boilers operate with the optimal flue design, promoting safe and efficient venting of exhaust gases.

Automatic Pressurisation and Expansion Systems:

The project also involved the installation of new automatic pressurisation units and expansion systems, which help regulate water pressure within the heating systems and prevent system failures due to over-pressurisation.

Side Stream Filtration Systems:

To maintain the cleanliness and efficiency of the heating systems, side stream filtration systems were incorporated, ensuring that water quality is maintained, and the systems continue to operate at peak efficiency.

LTHW Heating and Gas Pipework Installations:

Comprehensive pipework installations for both the LTHW heating system and the gas supply were completed. This was essential for connecting the new condensing boilers to the existing infrastructure while ensuring safety and compliance with regulations.

Thermal Insulation Works:

To minimize energy loss, thermal insulation was applied to the pipes and systems, ensuring the heating system operates efficiently by retaining heat and reducing waste.

Heat Meter Installations:

New heat meters were installed to provide accurate measurement and monitoring of energy usage, helping the hospital trust track consumption and manage energy costs effectively.

Automatic Controls & BMS Installations:

The installation of advanced Building Management System (BMS) controls allows for seamless integration and monitoring of all mechanical and electrical systems. This intelligent control system enhances operational efficiency, providing real-time data for better decision-making and maintenance planning.

Automatic Gas Safety Shut Off Systems:

To ensure the safety of hospital staff and patients, automatic gas safety shut-off systems were installed, which provide immediate isolation of gas supplies in the event of a fault or emergency.

Electrical Installations:

Our electrical team carried out the necessary electrical work to support the new systems, including wiring, connections, and integration with the existing infrastructure.
